A regional visa center recently started trial operations in Jinan, capital of eastern Shandong province and will benefit nearly 100 million residents in the province and neighboring regions, officials announced.

The center is designed to handle visa applications from 38 countries and currently it is handling applications from 32 countries, officials said.

With its unique geographical advantage, Jinan is within the one-and-a-half hour urban commuting circle covering Beijing, Henan, Hebei and Anhui provinces.

The new facility will serve as a regional center for neighboring areas in study tours, immigration and overseas medical treatment, education and property purchases.

Gong Junqing, deputy director of the Foreign Affairs Office of Jinan Municipal People's Government, said that the center could eventually handle visa business for more than 100 countries.

That volume of visa business will be only after Beijing, Shanghai and Guangdong province, ranking it fourth in China.

As opposed to the other visa centers in China, the new regional visa center is the first one supported by a local government, Gong noted.

After its official launch, it will also incorporate exit and entry management services, market supervision and other foreign affairs services and become a window to facilitate the city's opening up, Gong added.
