Jinan, capital of East China's Shandong province, completed its first 5G video call on May 16, bringing the city one step closer to achieving commercial use of 5G network.

The phone call was made by Ji Peide, director of the Jinan bureau of industry and information technology, at the launching ceremony for the China Union 5G trail network.

Backed by the 5G network of China Union, the video call was made with a 5G phone and it doesn't require users to change their SIM card or phone number.

5G network features ultrahigh transmission rates, enhanced capacity and reduced latency compared with 4G.

China Unicom has invested special funds in the construction of 5G network in Jinan. To date, it covers the areas of Long'ao Building, Daming Lake scenic spot, Jinan West Railway Station, and Jinan International Airport.

China Union has also inked a deal with Qilu Hospital of Shandong University to build the first 5G medicine laboratory in Shandong province.

Ji said that Jinan boasts strong foundations and advantages in promoting 5G innovation and development.

Jinan enjoys completed information infrastructure and robust information industry and digital economy. The scale of the city's digital economy reached 290 billion yuan ($43.2 billion) in 2018, accounting for about 37 percent of its total economy.
