Jinan, capital of East China's Shandong province, has developed a large-scale AI industrial cluster along with Shanghai, Shenzhen, Qingdao, and Chengdu, according to an "AI industrial map" released on April 19.

The 2020 Global AI Industrial Map was unveiled at the first Summit of the Jinan National Artificial Intelligence Innovation and Application Pilot Zone held in Jinan, Shandong province.

The summit was attended by nearly 290 people and was aimed at promoting exchanges in the AI industry among national AI pilot zones across the country.

AI technology is playing an increasingly important role in epidemic prevention and control efforts and resumption of work during the COVID-19 pandemic.

The global artificial intelligence industry was valued at $156.6 billion and had a year-on-year growth of 12.3 percent in 2020. The entire AI sector in China was valued at $43.4 billion, up 13.75 percent year-on-year.

Jinan has made significant progress in boosting its AI industry in recent years, according to director of the Jinan municipal bureau of industry and information technology.

The value of the AI market in Jinan has grown from 41.7 billion yuan ($6.41 billion) in 2018 to 70 billion yuan in 2020, the number of AI enterprises has increased from 89 in 2018 to 281 in 2020, and R&D investment in the city's AI enterprises is also increasing year by year, from 623 million yuan in 2018 to 1.05 billion yuan in 2020.

AI companies in Jinan mainly focus on AI chips, AI servers, and smart sensors in terms of basic hardware. For computing systems, they are mainly involved in big data, internet of things, cloud computing, edge computing, and 5G technology.

AI is used in manufacturing, healthcare, education, energy, transportation, security, smart city development, agriculture, finance, logistics, and construction in the city. Manufacturing and smart city construction are the two areas relying the most heavily on AI.

Officials said that for the future development of the AI industry, more efforts should be paid to core technologies and application innovation. In addition, more AI infrastructure platforms are expected to be built and more investment is expected to be provided for research and development.
