Jinan, one of the core areas of the Shandong Comprehensive Pilot Zone for Replacing Old Growth Drivers with New Ones, is the capital city of Shandong province and renowned as the City of Springs. As the central city of the Bohai Rim, it is one of the 15 sub-provincial cities and the political, economic, cultural and financial center of Shandong province.

Covering 10,244 square kilometers, Jinan has a permanent population of over 9 million. Its GDP totaled 1.14 trillion yuan ($179.5 billion) in 2021, ranking 18th among Chinese cities.
