A major step in global scientific collaboration was made in Jinan, capital of Shandong province, on March 16 with the launch of the Shandong Attosecond Laser Science Laboratory. Led by Ferenc Krausz, the 2023 Nobel Prize winner in Physics, the laboratory is the province's first international high-level research platform headed by a top-tier global scientist.

Operating at the scale of one quintillionth of a second, attosecond laser technology allows scientists to observe and control electron dynamics. Krausz noted that Shandong's strong industrial base and innovation capacity provide a solid foundation for advancing frontier research. The collaboration is expected to expand applications in areas like life sciences, marine exploration, and precision manufacturing.

The laboratory is also expected to serve as a key platform for addressing critical technological challenges and fostering new quality productive forces. According to Sun Haisheng, director of the Science and Technology Department of Shandong Province, the province is quickly becoming a leading hub for laser technology in northern China.
