Jinan's China–Europe freight trains surge amid closer China–CEEC ties
Jinan's China–Europe freight train services saw strong growth in the first four months of 2026, completing 439 trips, an increase of 64.4 percent compared to the previous year.
This expansion reflects the strengthening economic ties between Jinan and Central and Eastern European (CEE) countries in recent years. Since 2022, collaboration has grown through expanded logistics networks and industry partnerships, including the establishment of a CEE assembly center in Serbia and a branch in Hungary by Shandong Hi-Speed Group.
A major breakthrough came in November 2025, when Shandong initiated its first full-timetable China–Europe freight train service connecting Jinan and Budapest, Hungary. This route, operating every other Thursday, reduces transit time to about 12 days – around 30 percent faster than conventional services – by utilizing fixed schedules, designated routes, and coordinated cross-border operations. The route has completed 14 trips, offering enterprises more stable and efficient logistics support.
The expanded rail network has further boosted trade between Jinan and CEE markets. Major exports transported via the freight trains include mechanical and electrical products, garments, plastics, textiles, and toys, primarily headed to Poland, Hungary, Romania, the Czech Republic, and Slovakia. Imports from CEE countries are primarily mechanical and electrical products, plastics, steel, aluminum materials, and agricultural products.
