Jinan leads pet transport services on high-speed rail
More than 700 pets have been transported through Jinan West Railway Station over the past year, accounting for over 70 percent of Shandong province's total rail pet shipments, as China Railway continues to upgrade its pet travel services.
The latest service allows pets to travel independently, no longer requiring owners to accompany them on the train. The new model offers multiple transport options and responds to growing demand from passengers seeking more flexible arrangements, such as relocating pets in advance or sending them to family members.
To ensure safety and comfort, the railway has introduced "mobile monitoring cabins" – upgraded transport crates equipped with fresh air systems, oxygen supply, temperature and humidity control, noise reduction and real-time monitoring. Features such as night-vision cameras and remote-controlled ventilation allow staff to track pets' conditions throughout the journey. The crates are placed in dedicated compartments, separated from passenger areas to avoid disruption.
Looking ahead, railway authorities plan to develop "pet travel + tourism" packages, encouraging travelers to explore destinations with their pets.
