Jinan wrestler delivers freestyle breakthrough for China
Nineteen-year-old Yang Yuanchong of Jinan made history by capturing the men's freestyle 97-kilogram title at the 2026 Asian U20 Wrestling Championships in Pattaya, Thailand, becoming the first Chinese wrestler to win a gold medal in men's freestyle at the continental junior tournament.
Representing China after rising through the ranks of the Jinan Sports School, Yang defeated a strong field of opponents from across Asia to claim the title. China finished the championships with six gold, two silver, and three bronze medals. The women's team topped the overall standings, while Yang's breakthrough provided a milestone for the men's freestyle squad.
The triumph reflects the steady progress of Jinan's long-established wrestling program, which has produced a succession of elite athletes for provincial and national teams. In recent years, closer cooperation with the provincial squad and refinements to training and tactics have translated into increasingly strong results. Jinan wrestlers claimed 11 men's freestyle gold medals at the 2025 provincial championships, underscoring the city's growing competitiveness in the sport.
Yang's achievement is expected to further inspire the next generation of wrestlers in Jinan as the city continues to build on its tradition of excellence on the mat.
