Shandong Power Equipment Company Limited (SPECO) in Jinan has set a new world benchmark with the development of the first 320 Mvar/1,100 kV ultra-high-voltage (UHV) low-noise shunt reactor, a device used to stabilize voltage in power transmission systems.

The development addresses a persistent challenge in UHV power transmission. As transmission capacity and voltage levels rise, the vibration and noise generated by large-scale equipment become increasingly difficult to manage.

To fix this issue, SPECO created an integrated electromagnetic-mechanical control system that allows the reactor to achieve a noise level of only 62.6 decibels and a maximum vibration amplitude of less than four microns, setting a new global record for ultra-large-capacity low-noise reactors.

The achievement reflects the company's long-term commitment to independent technology development. SPECO also operates the world's largest transformer research and manufacturing site by production capacity, with an annual output exceeding 140 million kilovolt-amperes. Supported by advanced manufacturing and rigorous quality control, all 182 pieces of UHV equipment produced by the company since 2021 have passed their first commissioning tests.

SPECO's products are used in major energy projects across China and are exported to more than 40 countries, contributing to the global development of reliable and efficient power infrastructure.
