Gangcheng was approved as a district of Jinan in 2019. It covers 1,428.04 square kilometers, had 989,500 residents and administers two sub-districts and five towns. Gangcheng district boasts rich mineral resources such as coal, iron, copper, gold and dolomite.

According to official data, Gangcheng district achieved a regional GDP of 27.8 billion yuan, a year-on-year growth of 8.9 percent in 2019, with the growth rate ranking second in Jinan. The added values of its primary, secondary and tertiary sector were 994 million yuan, 18.39 billion yuan and 8.41 billion yuan, respectively, year-on-year increases of 3.3 percent, 10.9 percent and 4.7 percent.
