The suanzhan'er is a nickname for tanghulu, which is a traditional Chinese snack with sugar coated haws on a stick, in Jinan. Locals have been making suanzhan'er for more than 200 years.

Zhang Zhenglun is the fourth-generation inheritor of suanzhan'er in Jinan. "The suanzhan'er in Jinan is different from other tanghulu in the country. Its sugar is made from rock sugar, sesame oil and water, making its color brighter," Zhang said.
