The development of the traditional Chinese medicinal material industry in Jinan, Shandong province has been booming, and this has in turn helped with poverty alleviation by increasing the incomes of rural families.

Jinan has an abundance of Chinese medicinal ingredients, with more than 40 varieties of herbs planted in the city.

As of 2019, the area in which Chinese medicinal ingredients are grown reached 191,500 mu (12,766.66 hectares). There were also 79 large-scale plantations, 23 processing enterprises and 73 farmer cooperatives.

Wang Jian, general manager of a traditional Chinese medicine company in Jinan, said that his company relies on the local's farmer cooperatives which have planted large amounts of ingredients such as honeysuckle, radix isatidis and the root of red-rooted salvia.

The city has also taken many measures to fast track the development of its Chinese medicinal materials industry.
