Maribor is the second largest city and also the economic, transportation, cultural, educational and scientific center in Slovenia. It was awarded the title of "Alpine City" in 2000 and selected as a "Culture City of East Europe" in 2012. The city hosts the Alpine World Cup Slalom Race every January.

Maribor established sister city ties with Jinan, capital of East China's Shandong province, in 2018. The two cities have since deepened exchanges in economy, trade and education.
