Ejiao, or donkey-hide gelatin, is gelatin obtained from the skin of the donkey by soaking and stewing. It is used as an ingredient in traditional Chinese medicine and honored as one of the three treasures in TCM with ginseng and pilose antler.
It was named after its place of production -- Donge town in Pingyin county. The Fupai Ejiao of Donge town is produced by Pingyin Ejiao Factory (today's Shandong Fujiao Group), which incorporated several Ejiao makers such as Shudetang, Huaidetang and Taiziheng.
Material selection is elaborate and the production involves many steps, such as donkey skin processing, donkey skin soup boiling, concentrated gelatin collecting, cutting, drying, printing and packaging. It requires precise skills and is of high historical and cultural value in Chinese medicine.
