Jinan continues to strengthen its innovation capabilities, with a more complete innovation platform system and steady improvement in global rankings.

According to the latest list of the world's top 100 science cities published by Nature, Jinan ranks 31st globally-up one spot from last year-and remains 15th in China's national ranking of innovative cities.

The city is accelerating the development of major innovation platforms, including the Jinan Science and Innovation City of the Chinese Academy of Sciences and the Jinan base of a national laboratory. It leads the province with three provincial laboratories, 126 key provincial labs, 81 new provincial R&D institutions, and 51 academician workstations.

In 2024, Jinan's total research and development spending reached 37.49 billion yuan ($5.16 billion), up 8.1 percent year-on-year.

The output value of the city's high-tech industries increased by 9.61 percent year-on-year, accounting for 59.22 percent of the total output of industries above designated size, 5.9 percentage points higher than the provincial average.
