An exhibition of Li Kuchan (1899–1983), a master of freehand flower-and-bird painting and a disciple of Qi Baishi (1864–1957), recently opened at the Jinan Art Museum, and will run through April 23.

Held alongside Qi Baishi and His Disciples from Shandong, the exhibition has Li's 115 original works and rare documents, tracing his artistic evolution from Qi's teachings to his own innovations.

One of the highlights is the monumental ink painting Shengxia, at nearly 22 square meters. This piece symbolizes Li's desire for the rejuvenation of China, featuring lotus flowers, leaves, birds, and rocks. Other notable works include Li's iconic eagle depictions, renowned for their minimalist yet powerful brushwork that captures strength and spirit.

The exhibition also offers insight into Li's creative process through letters and manuscripts that reveal the influence that poetry, calligraphy, and philosophy had on his art, as well as the deep bond between him and Qi.
