An exhibition on Dongyi culture, spanning the Xia, Shang, and Zhou dynasties (c. 21st century–256 BC), opened at the Shandong Museum in Jinan on Jan 6.

The Dongyi were a group of ancient tribes from the Haidai region, centered in today's Shandong province, with roots dating back to the Neolithic era from 5,300 to 4,300 years ago. They played a crucial role in early Chinese history, contributing to cultural milestones such as the Dawenkou (4000–2600 BC) and Longshan (2500–2000 BC) cultures. Known for their innovations, including black pottery as thin as eggshells, advanced bronze casting, and winemaking, the Dongyi laid the groundwork for many of China's later achievements.

The exhibition is organized into four sections and features over 110 artifacts of pottery, stone implements, and bronzeware. It explores the Dongyi culture's evolution from an independent power to their eventual integration into Chinese civilization.

The exhibition offers a fresh perspective on Chinese heritage, shedding light on the diverse roots of its pluralistic origins.
